A love that crossed the Nile

Adut had only been in Cairo for three weeks when she matched with Marco. She was lonely, overwhelmed, and still unsure whether moving had been the right decision. Her first message was honest: "New here, no idea what I am doing, help?"

Marco had lived in Cairo for years but still remembered what it felt like to be new. They met for coffee that week, and what was supposed to be an hour turned into an entire afternoon of walking along the river, talking about everything except small talk.

She almost did not show up to their second date — she told her friends it was too fast, too easy, too good to be true. But she went, and she kept going. Marco introduced her to the city, to his family, to a side of Cairo she would never have found alone, and somewhere along the way home stopped being a place she had left and became a person.

He asked her to stay. She said yes, every day, in every small decision after that.

They were married a year and a half later — a tiny ceremony with both families on video call, still crying, still amazed that two strangers on a dating app could turn into a family.

"When I moved, I thought I was leaving everything behind," Adut says. "Turns out I was moving toward it."
