A safari of the heart
Christine's South African husband turned work trips into a courtship across savannas.
Christine was a travel coordinator in Juba who had mapped half of East Africa but never imagined her own love story had a route. Johan, a South African safari lodge owner from Johannesburg, matched with her while planning trips in the region. His first message was a photo of a sunrise over savanna with the caption: "Can you plan us a trip with no return date?"
Their first date was a weekend he arranged — not a hotel ballroom but a drive to one of the lakes, a bush lunch, and a night of stars he insisted she name. Christine, who usually did the planning, sat back and let someone else take care of every detail.
Every trip to Juba meant another escape: a karaoke night, fine dining at the Pyramid, river picnics, and once, a ridiculous and wonderful attempt at teaching him to dance her way. He learned her family's songs; she learned his lodge's work; they learned each other.
He proposed at sunrise, on the same lakeshore where their first date had ended, with both families watching from ring-side seats on video call. Their wedding was half in Juba, half on a South African farm, and the honeymoon was a safari where he finally let her plan.
"I had spent years organizing other people's greatest days," Christine says. "Johan decided my greatest days were worth organizing too. He takes care of me with the same calm he gives to the bush — constant, protective, and endless."
