Coffee, then forever

Yar was a lawyer at a ministry in Juba, raised on stories her grandmother told in the shade of coffee ceremonies. When she matched with Dawit, an Ethiopian businessman from Addis Ababa, his first message asked what her favorite coffee was. She wrote back, "The kind shared slowly." He replied, "Then we will do it properly."

Their first date was pieced together over three hours of coffee and conversation at a quiet café in Juba. Dawit poured, explained how to roast beans the way his family did, and somehow turned a simple cup into the most romantic afternoon of her life.

Every trip to Juba meant a new kind of date — a garden breakfast, a riverside lunch, fine dining at the Pyramid, a slow evening with music. He taught her family his roasting method; her family taught him their songs. By the time he proposed, he had already become part of her home in every way that mattered.

The proposal happened at the same café table where they had first talked, with her grandmother's blessing given in person. Their wedding brought two coffee cultures together and served more ceremonies than anyone could count.

"Everyone told me rich men want a housewife who says nothing," Yar says. "I found the rare man who wanted my company at his table, my voice in his decisions, and my family at his side. He takes care of me — and he respects me. Without the respect, the care means nothing."
