Eid lights and a new beginning

Halima was a young pharmacist in Juba, close with her family and quietly observant of everyone who tried to win her over. Rashid, an Emirati trader based in Dubai who worked in East African markets, matched with her and opened with a respectful, honest question about her family. That respect — that she might matter enough to be asked properly — was the whole reason she replied.

Their courtship began with long calls, then carefully arranged dates each time he visited: garden lunches, a rooftop dinner at the Pyramid, karaoke with her cousins, always with her permission asked first and her comfort checked second.

Rashid came to Juba as a guest and stayed as a son-in-law in training, learning her habits, her mother's cooking (which he praised correctly), and the songs that played at her happiest memories. On Eid, he arrived with gifts for her entire family before any engagement was discussed.

The proposal came at sunset during Eid, surrounded by lanterns and both families, in the way she had described to him once in passing. He remembered. The wedding blended his traditions and hers into a celebration that ran three days.

"I wanted someone who would respect me enough to court my family too," Halima says. "Rashid took care of me and everyone I love. A man who cares for your family has already chosen you forever — the ring was just the paperwork."
