Fine dining at the Pyramid

Akuol was a procurement officer in Juba, sharp and independent, but tired of the same small talk at every coffee shop in town. When she matched with Emeka, a Nigerian engineer based in Lagos who traveled to Juba quarterly, the first thing he asked was her favorite dish. She said grilled tilapia. He said they would find the best tilapia in the city.

Their first date was at Pyramid Hotel, where the fine dining hall overlooks the pool and the city lights come on slowly. He had booked the quiet corner table, ordered for her taste, and let the conversation run for three hours. Akuol told her friends it felt like finally being seen.

From then on it was a ritual: whenever Emeka landed in Juba, there was a reservation — Pyramid fine dining, the karaoke lounge, hidden garden restaurants she had never noticed in her own city. He never treated Juba like a work stopover. He treated it like a home he was building.

He proposed by the pool at the Pyramid, at the same table where they had their first date, with both their families watching over video call from Juba and Lagos. The wedding was a full weekend — Nigerian and South Sudanese traditions side by side under one tent.

"I used to think I was too much," Akuol says. "Emeka showed me I was exactly enough. He took care of me, yes — but more than that, he made sure I never doubted my own worth."
