Kenya to Juba, and straight on till morning

Ayak was a marketing manager in Juba whose calendar ran on schedules and whose love life had turned into a mosquito-borne disease nobody wanted to discuss. When she matched with Otieno, a Kenyan pilot based in Nairobi who flew the Juba route frequently, his first message was beautifully on-brand: "I am in Juba more often than I am home. The only city missing from my itinerary is you."

Their first date was a rooftop dinner at the Pyramid with a view of the runway — Otieno's idea. He had just flown a full crew and still showed up with coffee for her, because he had noticed her profile mentioned she ran on it.

Every flight brought a date: karaoke where he was suspiciously good, fine dining, brunches by the river, a weekend trip he chartered nothing for (his charm required no aircraft). He taught her to read the sky; she taught him to read her heart. He met her family, who took one look at his uniform and her shining face and started planning louder than the wedding committee.

He proposed on the rooftop, under a full flight pattern of stars, with a ring he had kept in his flight bag for three months. The wedding was in Juba; the honeymoon, naturally, was somewhere with better runways.

"The first pilot I dated showed up late. Otieno lands on time," Ayak laughs. "He takes care of me like he flies — smooth, safe, and always turning up exactly when I need him. The only turbulence is how hard I love him."
