Private table for two

Nyanut was a lecturer at the university in Juba, calm and precise, the kind of woman who noticed everything. When she matched with Oliver, a British investment analyst from London who traveled to East Africa for work, she noticed first that his messages arrived at 5 a.m. his time — because he was thinking of her before his day began.

Their first date was fine dining at the Pyramid, where Oliver had arranged for a private table by the pool and a menu he had already studied. He asked her about her students and her research, then asked again, because he was actually listening. Nyanut told her friends it was the first date that felt like a conversation.

Oliver visited Juba every few months, and every visit was arranged around her: a rooftop dinner, a karaoke room where he sang terribly and laughed about it, a Sunday market date where he carried her bag and let her teach him local names for everything.

He proposed during a quiet candlelit dinner, with a small box and a larger question: would she come to London for a year, not to leave her home, but to bring him into it? They married in Juba with both cities on video, and now live between two continents.

"He never once made me feel like I was being rescued," Nyanut says. "He made me feel like he was being chosen. The dinners, the trips, the care — all of it was him earning the choice I had already made."
