Ramadan together, married forever

Mustafa, a teacher and development officer from Turkey, arrived in Juba to help train local instructors. At his first partner meeting, he was paired with Nyangwiel, a bright young coordinator from a devout family, and they spent the afternoon arguing enthusiastically about lesson plans. He has maintained ever since that she won.

Their friendship grew over shared work and shared lunches, then over dates — garden restaurants, rooftop dinners, the celebrated fine dining at the Pyramid. But the turning point came at Ramadan, when Nyangwiel's family insisted the foreign colleague who had been eating alone break his fast with them. Mustafa, raised in the same tradition, felt something shift: strangers had become family, and one stranger in particular had quietly become his reason to stay.

He learned her family's rhythms, her mother's cooking, the prayers that marked each Friday. He took the relationship to her father the proper way, respectfully, with his intentions stated clearly and both families invited. His family flew in from Turkey to meet hers before anything was official.

He proposed at Eid, with lanterns and both families present, in a ceremony that honored their faith and her culture completely. The wedding celebrated two countries at one table.

"Everyone said a foreigner could never really understand this life," Nyangwiel says. "Mustafa did not try to understand it from outside. He stepped inside my family's world and let it reshape him. That is what I fell in love with — a man who honors what I honor."
