Texas heart, Juba home

Achol was a nurse at a Juba clinic, running shifts through every season without complaint. Her sister made her profile on Jambah as a joke. Tyler, a civil engineer from Dallas, Texas, working on water projects across Africa, swiped right because of something in her eyes that he could not name.

Their first date was a simple lunch at a rooftop garden, where Tyler admitted he knew almost nothing about South Sudan and wanted to learn everything. He took notes. Achol teased him for being the first man who ever treated her city like a subject worth studying.

Every few months he flew to Juba, and each visit was planned like a campaign: a grill night by the pool at the Pyramid, a karaoke room with a borrowed voice, a weekend driving through the city with her pointing out every neighborhood where she had grown up. He saw her city the way she had always wanted someone to see it.

He proposed at the clinic gates after her shift, with her whole team watching, saying he wanted to take care of the woman who took care of everyone else. The wedding took place in Juba and Texas, twice, because neither family would miss it.

"I did not need saving. I had a good life," Achol says. "But Tyler came with his whole heart and half of Texas, and he made sure I never worked a shift alone again. That is what being taken care of really means — a partner, not a provider and a passenger."
