Adior & Carlos Juba · São Paulo, Brazil September 22, 2026

The Brazilian who danced his way in

Carlos came to Juba to set up logistics. Her family had other plans for him.

Carlos, a logistics coordinator from São Paulo, was sent to Juba to establish a supply office. On his third week, at the opening dinner of a community project, he saw Adior across the room and — by his own admission — forgot his entire plan. They bonded over shared outrage at the quality of the sound system and never stopped talking.

Their courtship was a culture exchange in both directions. Carlos taught her Brazilian dances, which she performed with impressive skepticism and eventual delight. Adior taught him her language, her family's manners, and the rules of her kitchen, where he was quickly demoted and slowly rehabilitated as the official dessert taster.

He fell in love with her culture the way he had fallen in love with her: all at once and all in. He learned to attend ceremonies early, to eat generously, and to dance at weddings like his life depended on it — a skill her uncles insisted he pass a test in before he could propose.

Carlos asked her father for her hand in the traditional way, then proposed again, privately, in Portuguese, because he wanted her to know what he would tell her for the rest of his life. The wedding was in Juba, with a second celebration in São Paulo where her family taught his to dance back.

"People saw a foreigner and assumed I would be the one changing," Adior says. "Carlos came to work and left having been adopted by my whole compound. He took care of me the only way that lasts — by loving everything that made me."
